It’s been a
while since I last blogged, but I have good reasons, I promise! For one, as
this is a PGCE blog, and I haven’t actually started my PGCE yet, I’ve not
really got much to say.
I went to
my pre-induction day at university at the end of June. It was really
interesting and great to meet people. We found out our groups (I’m group B) and
our timetables. We have a special timetable for the first two weeks and then
after that I’m in university Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday morning and Thursday
morning. I got quite excited at the prospect of having Thursday afternoon and
Friday off, however I know in reality I’ll have such a heavy workload I’m
likely to be spending that time, and the majority of my weekends, working
anyway!
We had a lecture
on writing at m-level. It scared me. The lecturer was great, really funny and
passionate, but it still made me super nervous. I’ve just ordered some books on
Amazon, one being “Doing your PGCE at M-level: A Guide for Students” by Keira
Sewell, I really hope it’ll help me understand what’s expected a little more.
Afterwards
we filled out our CRB forms and then went for a drink in the union. I couldn’t
stay for long as I had to get home and pack for my month away. But I think I’m
going to make some great PGCE friends!
I spent
July at Bradfield College, working as a Residential EFL teacher. It was an
interesting experience, with plenty of highs and lows, and this time I only
cried once! It made me realise that I love teaching, especially the pastoral
side, and that I prefer teaching younger children. The kids in my class were
between 9-16 and whilst I love the relationship you can have with teenagers,
they have strong opinions and a sense of humour, I found I could relate to the
younger ones better. Some days I didn’t know which class I would be teaching,
what grade they would be or if I’d taught them before. It was difficult but now
I know if I can stand in front of 15 teenagers for 2 hours with no prep time I
can do anything! It was the longest month of my life, but I’d do it all again
next year! I got to go on the London Eye, visit Bath and the Roman Baths, visit
Windsor Castle, sing at karaoke and watch kids eat snakes out of flour without
using their hands!
After a
hard month I needed a break and spent the week in Sennen Cove with my grandma
and auntie. We had a lovely time, we didn’t do much. The weather was nice most
of the time so we went to the beach, drank lots of wine and ate some tasty (and
fancy food). I got back yesterday and with only a month until I start my PGCE I
really need to start preparing!
